Experts agree; an alternate source of energy to the world's limited supply of oil and natural gas is a national imperative. The work being conducted at CHR directly supports President Bush's Advanced Energy Initiative and its goal of gaining independence from foreign sources of oil. But why hydrogen?
Hydrogen is the lightest and most common of elements. It is found everywhere in nature, in water and in many compounds. When properly harnessed, it can provide a safe, clean and unlimited supply of energy for all of the world's basic energy needs.
But making hydrogen a viable and practical means of energy for wide-spread use requires much in the way of research and scientific exploration. Researchers everywhere are looking for safer, more efficient ways of producing and storing hydrogen while manufacturers and engineers are considering the infrastructure needed for handling and transporting such a source.
Together, with the Savannah River National Lab and its research partners, CHR is addressing these and other important issues in the development of hydrogen. CHR will play a critical role in this global economy, in the research and development of commercial applications and, perhaps most important of all, in the education and public awareness of how the hydrogen economy can benefit us all
